Wednesday's Wonder Woman Gail Cherise Holland
Posted by Swager, in Real Women on September 7, 2011
Today is a special edition of Wednesday’s Wonder Woman, because we are featuring Ms. Gail Cherise Holland, a native of Ascension Parish, who is running for State Representative. Holland received a degree from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma and then received a law degree from Southern University A &M College. She has worked as a contract counsel at Capital Area Legal Services and served as the assistant district attorney for Ascension Parish. Enjoy our interview with Ms. Holland and remember her name October 22, 2011.
What are you running for?
State Representative
How did you decide to run?
I’ve always had an interest in how our state government works, especially in how the decisions made at the state capitol affect the hardworking taxpayers of our area. When the seat became an open seat, the timing seemed perfect to run for office. The support and encouragement of so many people I’ve known for years made the decision an easy one.
Is there someone who inspired your decision?
My mother, first and foremost. I grew up watching her enthusiasm as a public school teacher and how much she enjoyed the challenge of working hard to make a real difference in the lives of her students. I’d like to do that, too, just for a greater ranger of people on a different level… as a state representative.
What district would you like to represent?
Louisiana House District 58, a majority minority District located along the River Parishes.
Where is the district?
District 58 is one I know well. It includes parts of Gonzales, all of Donaldsonville, White Castle, Carville, and parts of St. James parish the district has a population of 24,246 of the finest citizens in the great state of Louisiana .
What concerns do you have that will address and benefit women and children?
My primary concern is a quality education for every child in District 58 which will, of course, benefit women and children. Without at least a high school diploma, there is no child and no woman who can strongly compete in today’s world. Head Start has proven its value over and over and its ongoing operations must be maintained.
Which improvements do you think are most needed?
1. Every elementary and high school in District 58 should receive passing grades in their mission to prove a quality education to our children. If one school fails, its improvement is definitely needed.
2. Our Head Start Programs must be protected from budget cuts.
3. How we spend taxpayer dollars must be improved to lighten our citizens’ tax burdens while maintaining critical services.
What separates you from others?
My real-world work experience at the state legislature, the Attorney General’s Office, and as Assistant District Attorney. I know how to draft a bill and how to get it enacted into law. I’d like to take my experience and put it to work for the citizens of District 58. You won’t find a candidate who cares more about the people of District 58 than I do.
Why should people vote for you?
Because I’m the only candidate that brings a fresh perspective and real-world legislative experience to the table. I know how to get the job done and hope to win the trust and confidence of District 58 voters so I can do it!
Encouragement to Others
For all the volunteers and tireless helpers, please know how much we all appreciate your efforts. From the Sunday School teachers to the volunteer firemen and law enforcement volunteers and Little League coaches, to the men and women who bake for fundraisers to help communities across District 58, a huge and heartfelt Thank You! You raise us all to a higher level and we are so much more because of you.
To future political candidates: Keep your dreams alive! There is always room for those who want to help others. Keep your priorities straight, trust in God, honor your family, and do your best. We need you!
What do you want people to take from this interview?
That the people of District 58 matter to me. I share their concerns, know the challenges we face in District 58, and have a strong desire to see our children succeed. I’d like to work to help make that happen as District 58 representative.

Striving For Success – Gail C. Holland

Gail C. Holland is a Christian with a strong work ethic and humble heart. She is a proud graduate of East Ascension High School, Oral Roberts University, and Southern University Law Center and a daughter of a dedicated Ascension Parish teacher. If just about everything in life involves politics on some level, then count her in for forty plus years. If politics means elected office, then this is her first opportunity to run for a public office.
The contributions she brings to the office she’s running for: Some say there’s no substitute for experience and she offer plenty of that, including service as a staff attorney for the legislature, four years as an Ascension Parish assistant district attorney, and five years as an assistant attorney general. In addition, she brings an important private-work-sector perspective to the table, having learned so much from managing her own law firm. Gail elaborates, “I know District #58 and bring plenty of enthusiasm to the District #58 representative’s race: you won’t find a candidate with a stronger desire to serve the people of this district or work harder on their behalf.”
Some of her hobbies are all team sports (except ice hockey!), but especially basketball, although she rarely has time for a game. Right now, her biggest challenge is to meet and talk with everyone in District #58 on how to make their community even better than it is now. Actions Gail has taken to overcome those challenges are attending churches, giving interviews, participating in candidate forums, hosting “meet and greets,” and enjoying everything from parades to fireworks. From young to old, the citizens of District #58 rock! Gail Holland strives to earn the trust and confidence of the people of District #58; to serve as their faithful representative in the Louisiana legislature. To see bills introduced on behalf of District #58 bear good fruit, especially with stronger education in our schools and real opportunities for job growth and jobs that allow our hard-working citizens to remain in our community.
When her clients are successful, she of course shares in their success. When her community is successful, she shares in its success, too. Almost everything is a team effort: we celebrate our victories and learn from our failures together, she expresses. Gail’s family has been in Ascension Parish for over half a century and her roots run deep here. She replies, “I have a wonderful family and will always consider myself to be very fortunate and successful because of them.” In her campaign she promotes, Education, education and education, followed closely by prison reform and job creation through the judicious reduction of our citizens’ tax burdens while maintaining critical public services. Gail’s most significant contribution is providing free legal services to those who could not otherwise afford help…there’s no feeling like helping someone who’s truly in need.

Running for Office: Gail Holland State representative District 58
Advocate River Parishes bureau
Gonzales lawyer and former assistant attorney general, Gail Holland, 46, of Burnside, said she will run for the open state House District 58 seat.
Holland, a Democrat who worked as a state Senate staff attorney in 2009 and 2010, said she will make education her top priority if elected in the Oct. 22 primary.
Incumbent Rep. Elton Aubert, D-Vacherie, was first elected to District 58 in 2007, but said last week he is running for the new Senate District 2 seat.
He said he is the only legislator who resides in the new district, which primarily follows along the Mississippi River.
Under reapportionment, House District 58 would drop Assumption and St. John the Baptist parishes, but retain portions of Iberville, Ascension and St. James parishes.
Holland was reared in Geismar for most of her childhood, which has been and remains in District 58, but her home in Pelican Point in Ascension was moved out of the district under reapportionment.
Holland said that under the law, she has a year to move back into District 58.
Before her more recent time as an assistant attorney general in the Gaming and Civil Rights divisions, Holland was an assistant district attorney from 2000 to 2004 in the 23rd Judicial District, which includes Ascension.
